Abstract/Concrete is a 10-foot-tall public sculpture by artist Neil Hamamoto, developed as the first work in his word/PLAY series. The work explores the shifting relationship between language and meaning, contrasting the abstract realm of ideas, theories, and concepts with the physical world of making, material, and labor.
As Lead Designer and Project Manager, I led the technical development of the artwork from concept through fabrication and installation. My role included 3D development, structural coordination, concrete and mold
design, fabrication oversight, budgeting, scheduling, and coordination between the artist, engineers, fabricators, and project stakeholders.
Fabricated from high-performance concrete (HPC) and steel, the sculpture was produced in Ontario, Canada by Spring Valley. At this scale, translating the artist’s concept into a structurally viable concrete object required close coordination between design, engineering, and fabrication.
