Liberty Portraits: A Monument to the 2024 Champions

The Liberty Portraits: A Monument to the 2024 Champions is a large-scale public artwork by LaToya Ruby Frazier celebrating the New York Liberty’s historic 2024 WNBA Championship. Unveiled on July 3, 2025, the installation occupied the plaza of Barclays Center in Brooklyn throughout the 2025 WNBA season. Commissioned by the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation’s Social Justice Fund.

Working with Kizy Art Productions, I served as Lead Designer and Project Manager, overseeing the technical development and realization of the installation from design through fabrication and installation. My role focused on translating the artist’s concept into a robust outdoor public artwork while preserving the scale, visual impact, and photographic integrity of the original vision.

Referencing the heroic scale of the Statue of Liberty, the work consists of ten double-sided, nine-foot-tall illuminated portrait structures dedicated to the players of the championship roster. One side presents each athlete in uniform, while the reverse depicts the player alongside their chosen family, photographed by Frazier in locations personally significant to them. First-person testimonies from players and their loved ones accompany the portraits, extending the work beyond athletic achievement to explore family, community, female leadership, identity, and collective strength.

I led the design development of the custom double-sided display structures, coordinating engineering, fabrication, material selection, lighting integration, detailing, and production across project stakeholders and vendors. I also managed fabrication reviews, quality control, site and installation logistics, and the development of maintenance strategies required for the work to operate reliably in a high-traffic public environment throughout its exhibition.
